fll never forget May 12, 2008 when we were having classes at Beichuan
Middle School, Sichuan Province, and a huge 21 hit the area that day.
At about 2:28 pm, our teacher , Mr. Wang, was teaching us singing on the
fourth floor of the teaching building. 22 we felt the building shaking
violently. It was an earthquake! It was too late to rush out to the outdoors.
23 later, the whole building fell down entirely. We were 24 in ruins.
We couldn't move at all. No one could really imagine at that split second, how
much pain we had 25 or how desperateQ色望)we felt as we waited to be
26 ? I heard Mr. Wang calling our names again and again...
Hours later, some people came to rescue and some of us were saved.
Later, I 27 this huge earthquake scaled 8.0 magnitude. It hit several
provinces including Sichuan, Gansu and Shanxi. So far it has 28 more
than 80,000 and injured 360,000. My hometown ■.-Beichuan was 29
the worst-hit areas. Our school, which was 30 filled with vigor( 活力)
and laughter, was a dead valley.
Words after such a/an -v could appear nothing but empty and
pointless. So many people's lives were taken away. So much 32 was
done and the whole city was 33 . Beichuan has become a history.
Now, some of my classmates and I were organized to study in a middle
school in Jiangsu Province. I still 34 dreaming and still strive for a
better future: to make our homes beautiful yet 35 .
May victims rest in peace. May survivors live to be stronger.

Clinton traveled to South Korea to visit President Kim Young Sam, he
repeatedly referred to the Korean president's wife as Mrs. Kim. By mistake,
President Clinton's advisers thought that Koreans have the same naming
customs as the Japanese. Clinton had not been told that, in Korea, wives keep
their family names. President Kim Young Sam's wife was named Sohm Myong
Suk. Therefore, she should be addressed (稱謂)as Mrs. Sohm.
President Clinton arrived in Korea directly after leaving Japan and had not
changed his culture gears. His failure to follow Korean customs gave the
impression that Korea was not as important to him as Japan.
In addition to Koreans some Asian husbands and wives do not share the
same family names. This practice often puzzles English-speaking teachers when
talking with a pupiFs parents. They become puzzled about the student's correct
last name. Placing the family name first is common among a number of Asian
cultures.
Mexican naming customs are different as well. When a woman marries, she
keeps her family name and adds her husband's name after the word “de”,which
means “of'? This affects how they fill in forms in the United States. When
requested to fill in a middle name, they generally write the father's family name.
But Mexicans are addressed by the family name of the mother. This often causes
puzzlement.
Here are a few ways to deal with such difficult situations: don't always
think that a married woman uses her husband's last name. Remember that in
many Asian cultures, the order of first and last names is reversed(顛侄U). Ask
which name a person would prefer to use. If the name is difficult to pronounce,
admit it, and ask the person to help you say it correctly.

A. use her middle name B. use her husband's first name

Many people influenced various aspects of my life, based on their personal
characteristics, achievements, and values. I have been fortunate to have had
numerous teachers and professors who I respect for their patience and
intelligence. There are artists who have inspired me by their talents and
creativity. I value many political leaders, who have inspired me by their
contributions to society, and their ability to change our futures. But of all the
people I have known in my life, the person I admire most is my father.
As the youngest girl in my family, I always considered myself to be
“Daddy's little girl”. While I grew up, it always made me sad to see so many of
my friends and neighbors without a father or father-like figure around. This
helped me appreciate how my father always takes an interest in his children's
lives. In every aspect of my life my father continuously pushes me to excel, so I
could accomplish(完成)my work outstandingly among my people. Whenever I
feel like giving up, or have a question or a concern, I know I can always call on
him for advice. From him I have also learned that sometimes you have to put
others' needs ahead of your own, but don't make yourself taken advantage
of(利用)by others. His strength seems to be unbreakable during hard times,
and he is extremely determined to accomplish anything he sets his mind on, no
matter how tiny it is. I highly respect him for how he stands up for what he
believes in, and will never back down. I have always admired his open mind,
compassion(憐,憫)for people, and sense of understanding. He is a very
reserved(保守的)man, but in our daily life, he has a great sense of humor, and
always knows how to put a smile on the faces of his wife, his children and his
friends.
Living in his affection and instruction, I am very proud of my father. He also
professes how proud he is of his children, and is still there to support us in
whatever we are involved in.
