And this child has no love at all. This child has no respect(尊重)for himself. He sees everybody as an enemy, and he can’t trust anyone. ” Who is Moses Zulu talking about? Are there even people who live like that? Sadly, in truth, there are. They happen to be the Zambian children that Moses Zulu helps to improve their lives. Zulu does his best to give many children hope to live even though they might have AIDS. Without his continuous work through his organization called Children’s Town, many Zambian children would have been forced to survive(生存)in an African city by getting a job as a street vendor(街頭小販), or helping other people. In 1990, Moses Zulu founded Children’s Town in Zambia, where one million children have no parents, largely because of AIDS. Children’s Town teaches children basic life skills needed for their future. Each child goes through a five-year training program where they’re taught responsibility(責(zé)任), values, and self-care. Zulu’s Children’s Town provides hope for less fortunate children. As we all know, a hero is any person who is respected for his qualities and achievements. There are not many people who are willing to help others in need. Zulu’s contribution to today’s modern society teaches us to lend a helping hand to others who are not as lucky as we are. He teaches us to make a difference in the world by helping others. He lived and built sawmills(鋸木廠)in California. Under the clear water lay a yellow lump: a gold-colored piece of rock. He reached into the cold water and took hold of the strange rock. Was it really gold? Marshall knew several tests for gold, but only one such test could be conducted there by the riverbank. He used another rock as a hammer to hit the gold-colored lump. It did not break, but its shape was changed. After he took it to the mill, some workers conducted another test. They beat the lump with a hammer. When the lump flattened but did not turn into pieces, they knew that the lump was not iron pyrite(黃鐵礦). After that, the mill cook threw it into a kettle of lye(堿液), where it was boiled for a day. The long-time boiling did not change the lump’s color. John Sutter, the mill’s owner, showed the lump on January 28. He performed two more tests on it. After his first test, Sutter observed that nitric acid, a strong acid, did not damage the lump’s appearance. Then he measured the density(密度)of the lump. The test showed that it was much heavier than silver. Sutter and Marshall were then sure that they had in their possession a gold mine. They told the crew to keep quiet about the news. However, in a letter one mill hand told his friends about his own efforts at gold mining. A storeowner overheard another mill hand talking proudly about his piece of gold. When a stranger got a look at a handful of gold dust, shown to him by a small boy at the mill, the arrival of a California Gold Rush was almost unavoidable. Its occurrence was made a certainty with the publication of a San Francisco news headline reading “GOLD MINE FOUND. ”Without delay, over ninety percent of the people in San Francisco took off in the direction of Sutter’s Mill. 【語篇概述】本文是記敘文。1848年1月, Marshall在美國加利福尼亞發(fā)現(xiàn)了金礦, 很快淘金潮就開始了。 29. As their children began moving up through the nation’s schools, it became clear that a new class of academic achievers was forming. Their achievements are reflected in the nation’s best universities, where mathematics, science and engineering departments have taken on a decidedly Asian character. This special liking for mathematics and science is partly explained by the fact that Asian-American students who began their educations abroad arrived in the US with a solid grounding in mathematics but little or no knowledge of English. They are also influenced by the promises of a good job after college. Asians feel there will be less unfair treatment in areas like mathematics and science because they will be judged more objectively. And the return on the investment in education is more immediate in something like engineering than with an arts degree. Most Asian-American students owe their success to the influence of parents who are determined that their children take full advantage of what the American educational system has to offer. An effective measure of parental attention is homework. Asian parents spend more time with their children than American parents do, and it helps. Many researchers also believe there is something in Asian culture that causes success, such as ideals that stress family values and emphasize education. Both explanations for academic success worry Asian Americans because of fears that they feed a typical racial image. Many can remember when Chinese, Japanese and Filipino immigrants were the victims of social separation. Indeed, it was not until 1952 that laws were laid down giving all Asian immigrants the right to citizenship. 【語篇概述】本文介紹了亞裔美國學(xué)生在美國受教育的情況以及面臨的問題。 33. Avoid killing the goose. 37. ________ In other words, you are going to kill the goose. If you work at a homeless shelter 50 hours a week for two weeks and then quit because you are overwhelmed(累垮), it won’t do nearly as much good as if you work five hours a week all year around. Kind people usually fall into a trap—they try to do so much good but they don’t realize that more is not always better. 38. ________ You don’t always have to sacrifice a lot to do something good.
