What punishments would you give for the crimes? Keys words : crime and Punishment Crime: robbery, drug dealing, murder, break in , rape, shoplifting, theft Punishment : the death, penalty, fine, prison sentence ,soft , life sentence Stage 2 reading extensively ①read for the first time and match the arguments with personal opinions ②read for the second time and plete the gaps with linking words Stage 3 exercises Exercise 3 1. Explain the sentences 1-8 are from an essay so are not as personal a the two letters to the newspaper. 1.) I think we should bring back harder sentences. 2.) I totally agree with the American idea of “three strikes and out”. 3. )They have bee like luxury hotels with television and gyms. 4.) I also believe we should restore capital punishment in this country. 5)We also need to think about the wishes of the families and friends. 6.) I am totally against harder sentences on principle. 7. )Capital punishment is judicial murder. 8. )It is a savage form of punishment which is against human dignity. 2. ss work in pairs , reading the sentences and matching them to personal opinions in the two letters. Exercise 4 Read the letters again and plete the gaps with these linking words (reason/result) 1. Ss do the exercise working individually; they then pare answers in pairs before checking answers as a class. 2. check the answers by having individuals read out the sentences Ex. 4 1.
