Can you sing?
Good morning ,ladies and gentlement! Today I am glad to talk about the second period of Unit3, Friends with English, Book 1 Can you sing? The lecture is including five parts: teaching material, teaching methods, learning methods, teaching procedure and blackboard design. Now let me talk about teaching material:
Part One Teaching Material
1. Status and function
This lesson is the key part of the unit in the topic “Can you..?” which develops kinds of activities to use English.
2. Teaching aims and demands
Knowledge objectives
1) Make the students use the sentence pattern Can you…? To communicate with each other.
2) Learn how to express somebody can/can’t do something.
3) Use the expression properly in daily life.
Ability objectives
1) To develop students’ abilities of communication and co-operation.
2) Let Ss understand each one has their own abilities.
Moral objectives
1) To cultivate students’ interests and confidence.
2) Make students learn from other students’ abilities.
3.Teaching key points .
1) Yes/No questions: Can you________ ? Yes, I can/No, I can’t.
2) Understand and act out the conversation.
4.Teaching difficulty.
Pronunciation of can’t.
5.Teaching aids
CAI, cards, Big Book, animal masks, musical instrument and puppet
Part Two Teaching methods
According to the new English Course Standard and the theory of quality education in
, I am going to use the following teaching methods:
1. Communicative situation Approach.
2. Game Approach.
3. Story telling.
4. Task-oriented approach.
Part Three: Learning methods
1. Communicate and co-operate with others to finish the task.
2. Observation Method, acting, games, pair work and Group work.
Part Four Teaching Procedure
Here’s the most importantant part, that’s teaching procedure..Warmimg up and revision part would take 5’ in this lesson. And 12’ for the presentation,8’for practice,12’ for extension. And 3’ for conclusion& homework.
Step1 Warm-up and Revision: Sing a song-----I can swim, one two three
At first, all the Ss sing the song in pairs with actions just like : I can walk, one two three. I can walk ,look at me….The song helps Ss get involed in the English class.
Because this is the second period of this unit. And the Ss have already learned the six words: cook, sing and so on.So I’ll have all the Ss listen to me carefully and do the action like this :Group 1, fly to the blackboard, and the Ss in group 1 fly to the blackboard. Peter, run to the door. And then Peter runs to the door. Later, they can do it in groups. This action game checks whether Ss have mastered the six verbs already. It can make Ss focus their concentration.
Step2 Presentation
1) The Big Book can help to present the sentences: Look! Is it attractive ? It tells the story. Let’s enjoy it.
Bird: I can fly. Can you fly?
Tiger: No, I can’t. But I can sing. Can you sing?
Bird: Yes, I can. And I can dance. What about you?
Tiger: No, I can’t. But I can eat you. Hahaha…
Bird: Help!Help…
After telling the story, I will write down the sentences on the blackboard: Can you ____? Yes, I can./No, I can’t. Ss learn the new knowledge step by step Yes, I can. / No, I can’t.. Here, we can emphasize the pronunciation of “t”.
2)Now let’s do something a little interesting. Throw a button to do pair work of page 19. “Can you draw? Yes ,I can./No, I can’t.”And the Ss make some drills to consolidate the sentence structure..Learning by doing can make the students interested in studying.
3)As we know, kids are curious with unusual things, so I play a stange sound to lead in the conversation.(CAI) T: What happened? Do you want to know trhe answer? Let’s watch the video. After watching,.I’ll ask two questions: Can Tony read? Can Gogo sing? Then watch again with questions.
Step 3 Practice:
1) listen and repeat.
2) Role play.
Make students understand by repeating and explaining several times.
And I encourage the Ss to add the words they’ve learned in their role play, in order to develop their abilities to use English.
Step4 Extension
1) No imagination No creation. To extend their imagination, I design a forest competition:
e.g. The animal of the forest need a new king, so they had a forest competition(CAI)
Dog: I am a dog. I can bark, woof…
Rabbit: I am a rabbit. I can hop and run.
Bird: I am a bird. I can fly. I can sing. I can dance. I am the king of the forest.
At last who can express the most kinds of abilities will be the king of the forest.(CAI shoes the music) Here comes the celebration. This crown is for the king. A forest competition can catch the students’ eagerness to do well in everything. 2)This is the happy time for us to learn a chant : Can you draw? (CAI)
It’s a very easy song for the Ss to learn, so I’ll mainly encourage Ss to express the rhyme in their way and create a new chant. (CAI)Then Ss act it out in groups. It can develop students’ abilities to understand and create
Step5 Conclusion
1)Read what they’ve learned today. Make Ss realize what they’ve learned.
2)Assessment:
In English class, suitable comments on Ss are very useful, so from the beginning to the end of this lesson, I’ll encourage the Ss try their best to be the best swimmer in this swimming pool;. The Ss should be co-operative, active and creative in their group. At last, the winner will get some stickers which the Ss like very much.
Step6 Homework

2. Act the chant for your family.
Part Five: Blackboard design
The blackboard writing, which I design centering on the main sentence pattern, is easy for the students to retell and remember it.
