In many instances, we produce idioms (慣用語,習(xí)語)which are all understandable by borrowing examples from animal munication. For example, we know that a frightened cat will arch (拱起) its back high in rigid curve (拱形). From this starting-point we might hear the expression, “He gets my back up!” meaning “He makes me angry.” In the same manner, we know that many animals, if challenged by attackers, will not turn and run away because this will encourage the attacker to attack them more forcefully. Instead, they will move backwards slowly to get out of harms way, always still facing their attacker. We call this action “backing off” and it can be used just as well with humans as with animals. In the case of humans, however, the back-off may not be physical but oral, as in using a kinder tone of voice and gentler words instead of fighting against the attackers. 59. When a cat arches its back high in a rigid curve, it shows that it is ________. A. angry B. pleased C. frightened D. defeated 60. The underlined expression “backing off “ means _________. Vocabulary D. munication ( C ) While the rest of the world carried on cycling during the 1950s and 1960s , America forgot how ; even high-school children would drive to school . Recently there has been something of a recovery in cycling , and in many areas it is a very useful way of getting around , especially where bike paths or bike routes have been built . You may well want to buy , hire or borrow a bike . There are two important results of this earlier drop in cycling in the USA . One is that many people do not know how to cycle . That is , cyclists often behave more like walkers than motorists : they ride in the sidewalk or on the wrong side of the road ; they do not care for stop signs or traffic lights ; they ride without lights at night ; they give no signals . The other result is that cycling is regarded by many people not so much as a way of getting from one place to another but as a way of life , a form of exercise , etc . As a result , large numbers of young Americans have ten-speed racing bikes . These are very high and fast and great if you are cycling long distance , riding up mountains or racing . At first , though , you may find them convenient for cycling in town , sightseeing or shopping --they are expensive , unfortable and hard to control until you get used to them , and unsuitable for rough stony roads . There are also ordinary bikes around . If you get hold of one of these ,you may find that the brakes (剎車)work by pedaling (踩踏板) backwards . This is perhaps safer than ordinary brakes when it is wet , but it seems to be less effective . This arrangement also means you cant pedal backwards in order to get the pedal in the right place for getting on or getting off . 63. The passage gives us a brief introduction ______. A. advantage of bikes B. cycling in America C. American transportation D. how to ride a bike 64. Young Americans prefer racing bikes because they ________. A. can help keep fit B. are easy to learn C. are safer to ride D. are expensive and popular 65. Which of the following does NOT result from the early drop in cycling in the USA? A. Cyclists do not care for traffic lights. B. People ride on the wrong side of the roads. C. Cycling is not considered a way of transportation. D. People have to pedal backwards to stop the bike. 66. From the passage we can learn that in the middle of the 20th century _______. A. many Americans enjoyed cycling B. cycling was popular in the world. C. racing bikes were better than ordinary ones. D. there were no special roads for bikes in America. ( D ) My students often tell me that they do not have "enough time" to do all their homework. My response often is “You have as much time as the president." I usually carry on a bit about there being twenty-four hours in the day for everyone, and suggest that "not enough time" is not an acceptable explanation of not getting something done. Once in graduate school, I tried to prove to my professor that I was working hard. His answer was "Thats irrelevant (不相干).Whats important is the quality of your work.” That led me to a new idea: the quality of the work, which is perhaps best explained in a sign: "Dont work harder. Work smarter." If you cant get more time, as few of us can, the only solution is to improve the quality of your work. That means improving ways to get more out of the same time. That should lead us to an analysis of our work habits, which for students should be read as "study habits". Then as a smart student, you will seek to improve those skills that you use in study, chiefly reading and writing. If you can, it will pay off in all your subjects. As to improving reading, one suggestion is to take a quick nap when you feel reading puts you to sleep, which later helps you read better. The second solution is to speed up. But there are other issues. First, you need to find a place where you can work without unnecessary disturbances. Second, you need to take control. Success depends on realizing that you have to take active control over what you are doing. Third, you might as well get hold of a good book on reading and master the reading skills that pay off in all your classes. Talking about advice on good writing habits, you simply have to master the writing skills. Increasing your efficiency in both reading and writing will pay off immediately in terms of the quality of your work and in terms of the time spent doing it. Then you will be able to do better work in less time. And maybe you will find time to play golf with the president. 67. Whats the main idea of the passage? A. In fact, everyone has as much time as the president. B. The key to having enough time is to improve work quality. C. Reading and writing matter a lot in finishing homework. D. Not having enough time is unacceptable for unfinished work. 68. According to the author, the students do not have enough time to get their work done mainly because ______. A. they lack good learning habits B. they only have 24 hours a day C. they feel sleepy while reading D. they are not good at writing 69. The author believes a most important way for a student to improve work quality is to______. A. improve reading and writing skills B. find a quiet place to read and write C. take control over his or her work D. read and write in all classes 70. According to the passage, "Dont work harder" means that ______ . A. one should not be more devoted to ones work B. one should not spend more time in working C. working harder is not allowed in our daily life D. working harder is not the key point in work ( E ) 根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,從短文后的選項中選出能填入空白出的最佳選項。選項中有兩項多余選項。 Most of us lead a busy life. 71 We think, “If I reached my goal, then I would be happy”, or “If I could get a better job, then I would enjoy life.” But why not enjoy life right now? Firstly, take time to notice and appreciate the beauty in your own surroundings. 72 “There is a great big world of wonder and beauty around us!” And as Brodersen explains. “Look for the beauty of the sunrise and of a friend’s smile that brightens your day. Open your eyes to see the beauty you might not normally see. Doing so helps to cheer you up.” Secondly, taking time to experience some simple pleasures also can bring joy to your heart and ease your stress. Take me for example. 73 One universal simple pleasure is finding things that make you laugh. Make time to laugh every day. Thirdly, don’t take your family and friends for granted. Rich, rewarding relationships add greatly to the enjoyment of life. When you think of someone, why not call, e-mail or write them? 74 As Wayne Lawton explains, “Invest time in relationships. Remove the attitude, what’s in it for me? Happiness is found in putting other’s interests, desires and concerns ahead of our own whenever possible. Selfishness is a dead-end street.” 75 A.
