Social robots are about to bring technology to the everyday world in a more humanized way, said Cynthia Breazeal, chief scientist at the robot pany Jibo. While household robots today do the normal housework, social robots will be much more like panions than mere tools. For example, these robots will be able to distinguish when someone is happy or sad. This allows them to respond more appropriately to the user. The Jibo robot, arranged to ship later this year, is designed to be a personalized assistant. You can talk to the robot, ask it questions, and make requests for it to perform different tasks. The robot doesn’t just deliver general answers to questions; it responds based on what it learns about each individual in the household. It can do things such as reminding an elderly family member to take medicine or taking family photos. Social robots are not just finding their way into the home. They have potential applications in everything from education to health care and are already finding their way into some of these spaces. Fellow Robots is one pany bringing social robots to the market. The pany’s “Oshbot”robot is built to assist customers in a store, which can help the customers find items and help guide them to the product’s location in the store. It can also speak different languages and make remendations for different items based on what the customer is shopping for. The more interaction the robot has with humans, the more it learns. But Oshbot, like other social robots, is not intended to replace workers, but to work alongside other employees. “We have technologies to train social robots to do things not for us, but with us, ”said Breazeal. 1. There are practically no more“simple toys”in the toy market nowadays where it’s slowly being led by more plicated devices. Children have more discerning taste when it es to their playing pleasure. So in an age where cellphones and digital cameras are just all too mon, what’s really the buzz about the wonders of a robot toy? To put things simply, an electronic robot toy is an extremely sophisticated(精密的)piece of technology especially for children who have always been used to playing with either plastic, wooden or luxurious toys. The high-tech robot toy, Robo Sapien promises to be a whole more than just a simple robot toy. A smart robot toy like this actually tries to break the mold ordinary plastic robot toys that only has blinking lights and beeping sound effects. Robot toys that are available in the market today are far more sophisticated than that especially since they’ve been able to make these robot toys more interactive. Video games cannot be considered as a robot toy. The once popular Tamagotchi may look like a video game but it is actually a robot toy. Video games are just electronic role playing mind games where you have a specific goal that must be taken care of while a robot toy like the Tamagotchi is actually highly dependent on the interaction between the Tamagotchi and the user. There are actually all sorts of robot toys available in the market today, from highly sophisticated, not to mention, costly, Robo Sapien to outdated Tamagotchis to high tech robot toy pets that have caused quite a stir even in Japan where people don’t really have that much time to take care of a real dog. Robo pets have been creating a lot of buzz in the toy market because of their highly innovative design and almost life like actions. e to think of it, not only children are getting into the whole robot toy craze, with many grown adults now getting more and more hooked to the robot toys in the market. 6. The three middle letters in vOICe stand for“Oh, I see. ”Meijer’s groundbreaking technology may change the lives of visually impaired people all over the world. A wearable setup of vOICe system consists of a head-mounted camera, stereo headphones and a notebook PC. The system translates visual images from a camera into plex sounds. __2__The program is based on the theory that people can hear certain sounds and learn to translate them into meaningful mental images. Everything has its own unique sound. __3__The height of an object or person could be determined by pitch(音調(diào)). And a built-in color identifier speaks out color names when it is turned on. What the vOICe users have to learn is which sound goes with which object. Meijer says that he is counting on the brain’s ability to adapt. __4__Within two weeks, most people who experiment with the vOICe system are able to identify objects such as walls and doors. They are also able to identify certain situations, including whether the lights in a room are on or off. __5__Meijer thinks that translating will eventually bee automatic for many users of the vOICe, bringing a form of vision to them for the very first time. A. Brighter areas sound louder than darker areas. B. It then sends these sounds to a person through headphones. C. However, they are not learning to see with their eyes; they are learning to see with their ears. D. The vOICe system is aiming to treat blindness by translating images from a camera into audio signals. E. Meijer supposes that the brain is interested in the information“content”, but not the information“carrier”. F. To evaluate the new system’s effectiveness, a number of visually impaired people were chosen to test the vOICe. G. Over time, some users have even learned to“watch”television or“recognize”the outlines of buildings as they walk. 3. 【解析】選A。 Everything has its own unique sound. Dear Tom, I am glad to hear that you are going to Canada to study.
