Luckily, we saw a rest area ahead. I had a brand-new $ 20 bill. I was so 39 because I had never had that kind of cash before. But spending it on 40 seemed like throwing it away. For the next two years, whenever I was 50 of the “pizza incident”, I would say to myself, “Don’t think about it …” I have learned two things from this 51 . Maybe I was a fool for 52 in to my conscience, and being too stupid to enjoy a 53 pizza. But the real lesson is that even if you get away from what you have done, your conscience will 54 up with you. This reflects the saying, “A coward (懦夫) dies a thousand deaths, a hero dies one.” I was a coward and have felt terrible about that incident at least a thousand times. If I had been a “ 55 ” and gone back to pay for the pizza, I would have felt a little unfortable about it only once, or maybe twice. 36. A. say B. talk C. share D. explain 37. Chocolate is a product of the tropical cacao tree. The beans taste so bitter that even the monkeys say “Ugh!” and run away.Workers must first dry and then roast the beans. This removes the bitter taste. The word “chocolate” es from a Mayan word. The Mayas were an ancient people who once lived in Mexico. They valued the cacao tree. Some used the beans for money, while others crushed them to make a drink. When the Spaniards came to Mexico in the sixteenth century, they started drinking cacao too. Because the drink was strong and bitter, they thought it was a medicine. No one had the idea of adding sugar. The Spaniards took some beans back to Europe and opened cafes.Wealthy people drank cacao and said it was good for digestion. In the 1800s, the owner of a chocolate factory in England discovered that sugar removed the bitter taste of cacao. It quickly became a cheap and popular drink.Soon afterwards, a factory made the first solid block of sweetened chocolate.Later on, another factory mixed milk and chocolate together.People liked the taste of milk chocolate even better. Besides the chocolate candy bar, one of the most popular American snacks is the chocolate chip cookie.Favorite desserts are chocolate cream pie and, of course, an ice cream sundae with hot fudge sauce. 56.It was _____ that discovered sugar could remove the bitter taste of cacao. A.the cream pie B.the chip cookie C.the hot fudge sauce D.the chili pepper B When an emergency situation occurs, observers are more likely to take action if there are few or no other witnesses. This phenomenon is referred to as the bystander effect. The bystander effect is also called the Genovese effect, which is named after Catherine “Kitty” Genovese, a young woman who was cruelly murdered on March 13, 1964. Early in the morning, 28-year-old Genovese was returning home from work. As she approached her apartment entrance, she was attacked and stabbed (刺) by a man later identified as Winston Moseley. Despite Genovese’s repeated cries for help, none of the dozen or so people in the nearby apartment building who heard her cries called police for help. The attack first began at 3:20, but it was not until 3:50 that someone first contacted police. Many psychologists were set thinking by the incident, as well as most Americans. As the conclusion, the bystander effect came out and was later proved by a series of studies and experiments. There are two major factors that contribute to the bystander effect. First, the presence of other people creates a division of responsibility. Because there are other observers, individuals do not feel as much pressure to take action, since the responsibility to take action is thought to be shared among all of those present. The second reason is the need to behave in correct and socially acceptable ways. When other observers fail to react, individuals often take this as a signal that a response is not needed or not appropriate(恰當(dāng)?shù)模? Other researchers have found that onlookers are less likely to take action if the situation is ambiguous(模糊的). In the case of Kitty Genovese, many of the 38 witnesses reported that they believed that they were witnessing a “l(fā)overs’ quarrel”, and did not realize that the young woman was actually being murdered. 61. The bystander effect is also called the Genovese effect because ______. A. it somehow caused the murder of Genovese B. its discovery resulted from the murder of Genovese C. it was actually discovered by Genovese D. it always makes people think of Genovese 62. Genovese was murdered _____. A. while she was going out B. in her apartment C. halfway home D. near her apartment 63. Which can NOT have been a possible reason for the neighbors not offering Genovese help? A. They believed in the bystander effect. B. They thought someone else might help her. C. They didn’t think they should help. D. They didn’t think she needed help. 64. Before deciding to offer help, observers may ______, according to the psychologists. A. wait for a signal B. hesitate and estimate the risk of getting hurt C. want to be sure it’s appropriate to react D. wonder if the victim is worth helping 65. The article seems to suggest that, if there had been ______ observers, Genovese might not have been murdered. A. no B. fewer C. more D. braver C 1.Establish a regular bedtime and rising time, and stick to them. A regular bedtime and rising time can help you stabilize your internal clocks. Select a bedtime that’s good and natural for you. Don’t change your bedtime and rising time on weekends. Reprogramming your sleep rhythms for two days doesn’t do much to help you remove sleep debt, and it throws off your sleep-wake cycles just in time for a bad case of Sunday-night insomnia(失眠). 2.Avoid physical and mental stimulation(興奮)just before sleep. Physical effort too close to bedtime energizes your body’s systems by stimulating the release of adrenaline(腎上腺素). Mental stimulation includes any activity that taxes(使勞累) your mind or gets your thoughts racing, such as watching an action-packed TV show. Similarly, planning tomorrow’s schedule, or reading a chapter from a murder mystery novel before turning out the light does not give you adequate time to escape from mental activity before trying to sleep. 3.Determine how many hours you should be sleeping. To determine your ideal length of sleep, factor in these considerations:(1)how many hours you slept on average as a child,(2)how many hours you slept each night on average before your insomnia began,(3)how many hours’ sleep you require to awake naturally without an alarm set, and(4)how many hours you must sleep so as not to experience daytime sleepiness. 4.Don’t go to bed too early. Since your body normally lets you sleep only the number of hours it needs, if you’re going to bed too early, you will likely awake too early as well. 5.Avoid naps Four out of five people with insomnia sleep better at night without naps. If you’re a mitted napper, you can skip all naps for a week. If you feel better and sleep better, then drop them. 6.Take a warm bath within two hours of bedtime. A twenty-minute warm, soaking bath at a temperature of about 100-102 F not only is a great relaxer at day’s end, but also raises your inner body temperature by several degrees. The ensuring drop in body temperature will naturally cause tiredness and sleep. 66.Which of the following will be helpful for a sound sleep? A.Tiredness. B.Higher inner body temperature. C.Cool water. D.Lower room temperature. 67.What does the underlined word “them” refer to? A.People. B.Insominas. C.Naps. D.Nappers. 68.If you want to have a good rest and enjoy an energetic travel the next day, what shouldn’t you do the night before? A.Watch TV. B.Take a warm bath. C.Plan the next day’s travel. D.Go to bed at usual time. 69.We may learn from the passage that ______. A.most people have sleep difficulty B.many people prefer to sleep less at the weekends C.some people lack sleep during the weekends D.one needn’t keep the same bedtime the whole week 70.The writer mainly aims to tell us ______ in this passage. A.the difference between good sleep and bad sleep B.some ways of having a good sleep C.ways to get rid of bad sleeping habits D.how to arrange your night time D Last year, on report card(成績單) day, my son and a bunch of his 13-year-old friends piled into the back seat of my car, ready for the last-day-of-school party at McDonald’s. “Jack got a laptop for getting straight A’s, and Laurie got a cellphone,” one boy said. “Oh, yeah, and Sarah got an iPod Nano, and she’s only in third grade,” said another. “And how about Brian? He got $ 10 for each A.” I suddenly became concerned. These payoffs might get parents through grammar school, but what about high school and beyond? What would be left after the electric guitar, the cellphone, and the portable DVD player? I saw the road ahead: As the homework load increased, my ine would decrease. I saw my fortable lifestyle vanish before my eyes-no more of those $ 5 bags of already-peeled organic carrots. No more organic anything! I started to feel surprised and nervous. Would every goal attained by my two children fetch a reward? A high grade point average? A good class ranking? Would sports achievements be included in this reward system: soccer goals, touchdowns (美式足球中觸地得分), runs-batted-in? What about orchestra? Would first chair pay more than second? I’d be penniless by eighth-grade graduation. “We never paid anything for good grades,” said my neighbor across the street, whose son was recently accepted at MIT(麻省理工學(xué)院). “He just did it on his own. Maybe once in a while we went out for pizza, but that’s about it.” Don’t you just hate that? We’re all running around looking for the MP3 player with the most updates, and she’s spending a few dollars on pizza. She gets motivation; we get negotiation. 71.The sentence “As the homework load increased, my ine would decrease.” in the third paragraph probably means ______.
