111 The Second Period The General Idea of This Period In this period, the students read the whole passage and finish some exercises to understand the whole passage better. Teaching Aims 1. Improve the students’ reading ability. 2. Master some useful words and expressions. Teaching Important Points 1. Get the students to grasp the main idea of the passage and help them understand the passage better. 2. Learn and master the important words and phrases. Teaching Difficult Points 1. How to improve the students’ reading ability. 2. How to help the students master the important language points in this passage. Teaching Methods 1. Listening, reading, speaking and practicing. 2. Fast and careful reading to make the students understand the passage better. 3. Discussion to help the students finish the concerned exercises. 4. Individual, pair or group work to make every student work. Teaching Aids 1. the blackboard 2. the multimedia Teaching Procedures Step 1 Revision and Lead-in (Greet the whole class as usual.) T: In the last period, you talked about yourselves, your previous schools, your school life and your feelings about your new school. You all did a good job, I think. Do you want to know another student’s thoughts about his school? Let’s see what he/she is talking about. Step 2 Pre-reading T: Before reading the passage, let’s deal with three questions. The first one, what are the main differences between Junior High school and Senior High school? This question is a little difficult, you can discuss it with your partner and then stand up to answer it voluntarily, understand? Ss: Yes. (Students discuss it.) S:I think students at Senior High school work harder than those at Junior High school and they all have a hope to go to university. S: At Senior High, students have more space and freedom to study by themselves because they are old enough to do it like this, while in the Junior High school they are often asked even forbidden to study. S: The period of Senior High school is more important than the one in Junior High school in learning knowledge, developing interest and growing. S: There are more work, more students and teachers at Senior High school. T: OK. Quite good. From what you said, we know that this period is full of hard work, development, great hope and great achievements. So grasp every chance to develop yourselves and realize your dreams. Now what about the next two questions? (Students answer them together.) Step 3 Reading T: Now we will learn the passage about Li Kang’s first day at Senior High. In the text you may meet some new words, let’s look at them. Describe the general behavior of your Junior High class in English lessons: Do you all (a) work hard in class? (b)behave in a serious and polite manners?(c) sometimes get noisy? 3. Give an example of your English teacher’s teaching method. Does he/she (a) tell stories?(b) explain grammar?(c) write new words on the blackboard? 4. What do you find most difficult about English? (a) Reading comprehension. (b) Speaking. (c)Spelling.(d)Understanding instructions. 5. What’s the difference between this textbook and the one you used at Junior High? Think about (a) difficulty (b)photographs (c) reading texts. T: Just now you all answered the questions but I don’t know your ideas so now it is your turn to show your answers with a short passage. S:I am very enthusiastic for English. My English teacher at Senior High is a beautiful girl who often tells stories in class. She always has many ways to make her lessons lovely and interesting. I have some difficulties in learning grammar. I think I will learn it well this term. S:I am not very interested in English, because it is difficult to remember the words. In the English class sometimes we don’t behave in serious and polite manners. I think I will try my best to improve my English. T: OK. After talking about yourselves, let’s move to the passage. Read the passage quickly and try to find the answers to these questions on the screen. 1. What is something different about this Senior High school? 2. What are the two things that Li Kang’s teacher thinks important to do in class? 3. What are the two things that the English teacher wants to improve? (Teacher gives students five minutes to discuss and collects their answers.) Possible answers: 1. The teaching method, classrooms, students. 2. Reading comprehension and speaking. 3. Spelling and handwriting. T: Now let’s read the passage carefully and loudly and try to get the main idea of each paragraph. What about the first one? Ss: Li Kang introduces himself. T: Good. We can use only one word “self-introduction ”.Is it proper? Ss: Yes. T: What about the next paragraph? Suggested answers: Paragraph 1 Self-introduction Paragraph 2 Description of the school. Paragraph 3 Teaching method. Paragraph 4 What the students did in the first English lesson. Paragraph 5 Two skills that need improving. Paragraph 6 Description of the class. T: After fast reading you know the general idea of the whole passage. Now arrange the following sentences in the right order according to the text. (The teacher shows the sentences on the screen.) 1. My new school is very good and I can see why. 2. The English class is really interesting. 3. My name is Li Kang. 4. Ms Shen wants to help us improve our spelling and handwriting. 5. The teachers are very enthusiastic and friendly and the classrooms are amazing. 6. There are sixty-five students in my class—more than my previous class in Junior High. 7. The teacher is a very enthusiastic woman called Ms Shen. 8. I like her attitude very much. The right order:3 1 5 2 7 4 8 6 T: Maybe you have understood the passage better. Close the books and just listen to me carefully. I’ll read some sentences for you and then you should explain these sentences with your own words according to your understanding, are you clear? Ss: Yes. (The teacher reads the following sentences and students explain them one by one.) 1. Ms Shen’s method of teaching is nothing but like that of the teacher’s at my Junior High School. 2. I don’t think I will be bored in Ms Shen’s class. 3. Some students were embarrassed at first. 4. Ms Shen gave us instructions and then we worked by ourselves. T: What you have done is very good. Call back different opinions. 2 Students read the whole passage and deal with the exercise individually. Monitor them and give them guidance. 3 Explain some sentences using their own words.
