No one knew each other; the passengers all sat there sleepily in the morning. The bus was cheerless and silent. One of the passengers was a small gray-haired man who took the bus to the center for senior citizens. No one ever paid very much attention to him. One July morning he said good morning to the driver and smiled. The driver nodded guardedly. The rest of us were silent. The next day, the old man boarded with a big smile and said in a loud voice: “A very good morning to you all!” Some of us looked up, amazed, and murmured “Good Morning” in reply. The following weeks, our friend was dressed in a nice old suit and tie. He said good morning to us every day and we gradually began to nod and talk to each other. One morning he even had a bunch of wild flowers in his hand. The driver turned around smiling and asked: “Have you got yourself a girlfriend, Charlie?” We never got to know if his name really was “Charlie”, but he nodded shyly and said yes. The other passengers whistled and clapped at him. Charlie waved the flowers before he sat down on his seat. Every morning after that Charlie always brought flowers. Some passengers also brought flowers for him. The bus became a happy place. Then, one morning, as autumn was closing in, Charlie wasn’t waiting at his usual stop. When he wasn’t there the next day and the day after that, we started wondering if he was sick or on holiday somewhere. When we came nearer to the center for senior citizens, one of the passengers asked the driver to wait. We all held our breaths when he went to the door. The old gentle man was fine, but one of his close friends had died over the weekend. How silent we were the rest of the way to work. The next Monday Charlie was waiting at the stop, bending a bit more, a little bit more gray, and without a tie. Inside the bus was silent. Even though no one had talked about it, all of us sat there silently, our eyes filled with tears and a bunch of wild flowers in our hands. 51. What are we sure about the old man? A. His name was Charlie. B. He got sick over the weekend. C. He worked at the center for senior citizens. D. He was in great sorrow when we saw him the next Monday. 52. Which of the following is not true? A. The atmosphere on the bus was cheerful and lively at first. B. People were surprised at the old man’s first greeting. C. People were worried about the old man’s absence. D. People on the bus at last shared happiness and sorrow together. 53. Which would be the best title for the passage? A. How to Shorten the Distance between People B. The Key to Friendship — Communication C. Smiles Make a Bus Feel Like Home D. Charlie, A Smiling Gentle Man B Care for Your Dog Like human beings, dogs may catch cold because of cold weather, wet conditions or can also get it from other sick dogs. If a dog has a running nose and watery eyes, coughs or sneezes, then it is quite probable that the dog has caught cold. A dog’s cold can get over after a few days without treatment, but it totally depends upon the owner to treat it with medications or improve its immune power(免疫力)to get rid of the cold naturally. Following are some of the things you can do if your dog gets a cold. You can improve its immune power by giving it proper nutrient diet. Healthy food can really do wonders. Try to give it food which is either suggested by the vet or is healthy for your pet. Increase the food which is rich in vitamins A, C and E. Keep your dog warm. The best place for your dog in winter is inside your house. Do not keep your dog outside when it is cold and wet. At home you can also keep the dog warm with the help of carpets. This will make him comfortable and help him to recover fast. Increase the liquid diet as it helps a lot. Water can be the best choice but you can also add broth(肉湯)in water which will give your dog strength. Warm water will make your dog more comfortable and will also keep the dog away from the respiratory infections(呼吸道感染). Steam treatment is considered to be effective in getting rid of cold. It makes the nose wet, which helps proper breathing. Just fill your bathroom with steam and leave your dog inside the bathroom for 15 minutes. Do it nearly 2 to 3 times a day and you will see your dog recovering. These are some of the things you can do to help your dog recover from cold. However, if you are not able to find any improvement in its health, then turn to the vet for help immediately. 54. When your dog catches cold, you should feed it on _________. A. its favorite food B. food rich in vitamin B C. some meat and water D. the suggested food by the vet 55. When a dog catches cold, it is wrong to _________. A. keep it inside during cold and wet weather B. leave it inside the bathroom full of steam C. let it eat too much solid food D. keep it sleeping on rugs at home 56. It can be learnt from the text that _________. A. a dog’s cold can always disappear naturally B. it’s quite easy to make a sick dog recover from cold C. treating a dog’s cold sometimes needs a vet’s help D. cold in dogs won’t spread between each other. C Dreams It’s a fact that we all dream. Some dreams seem to last for hours, others only for seconds. Some of us have strange dreams, some have interesting dreams, and some of us have unpleasant dreams. Tests in the 1980s showed that these dreams occur within 90-minute cycles, each cycle made up of six stages. In the last stage people experience rapid eye movement, known as REM, and it is in this stage that dreaming takes place. Eighty percent of people who were woken during this sixth stage could easily remember their dreams. On the other hand, when during the first five stages (NREM), only seven percent could describe a dream. However, of these same people woken during the first five stages, 74% were able to remember thinking activity, although they would not call it a dream. NerysDee, who has written about dreams in a book called Your Dreams and What They Mean says: “Perhaps during NREM sleep we are sorting out our outer common problems, but in REM sleep we are dealing with inside matters.” She also makes the following statement about 90-minute cycle: It may also prove the reason why insomniacs who wake in the middle of the night find it impossible to get to sleep again for at least an hour and a half, in other words, until they have missed out one complete 90-minute sleep period. 57. According to the tests in the 1980s, dreaming takes place _________. A. between each 90-minute cycle B. in the last stage of 90-minute cycles C. at any time during 90-minute cycles D. during the first five stages of 90-minute cycles 58. People woken during REM sleep can _________. A. easily remember their dreams B. hardly remember their dreams C. only remember their dreams D. partly remember their thinking activity 59. “Insomniacs” are persons who _________. A. can always remember their dreams B. have trouble getting into sleep at night C. experience rapid eye movement D. usually wake after each 90-minute sleep period D Letter of “i” The iPhone, the iPad: each of Apple’s products sounds cool and has become a fashion. Apple has cleverly taken advantage of the power of the letter “i”, and many other brands are following suit. The BBC’s iPlayer, which allows Web users to watch TV programs on the Internet, used the title in 2008. A lovely bear—popular in the US and UK—that plays music and video is called “iTeddy”. A slimmed-down version of London’s Independent newspaper was started last week under the name “i”. In general, single-letter prefixes have been popular since the 1990s, when terms such as e-mail and e-book first came into use. Most “i” products are aimed at young people, and considering the major readers of Independent’s “i”, it’s no surprise that they’ve selected this fashionable name. But it’s hard to see what’s so special about the letter “i”. Why not use “a”, “b”, or “c” instead? According to Tony Thorne, head of the Language Center at King’s College, London, “i” works because its meaning has become ambiguous. When Apple uses “i”, no one knows whether it means Internet, information, individual or interactive, Thorne told BBC Magazines. “Even when Apple created the iPod, it seems it didn’t have one clear definition,” he says. “However, thanks to Apple, the term is now connected with portability.” adds Thorne. Clearly the letter “i” also agrees with the idea that the Western World is centered on the individual. Each person believes they have their own needs, and we love personalized products for this reason. Along with “Google” and “blog”, readers of BBC Magazines voted “i” as one of the top 20 words that have come to define the last decade. But as history shows, people grow tired of fashions. From the 1900s to 1990s, products with “2000” in their names became fashionable as the year was connected with all things advanced and modern. However, as we entered the new century, the fashion disappeared. 60. The underlined word “ambiguous” means “_________”. A. popular B. uncertain C. clear D. unique 61. Nowadays, the “i” term often reminds people of the products which are _________. A. portable B. interactive C. advanced D. recyclable 62. The writer suggests that _________. A. iTeddy is a live bear w W w . B. “i” products are often of high quality C. the letter “e” replaces letter “i” to name the products D. the popularity of “i” products may not last long 第二節(jié):閱讀下面短文和問題,根據(jù)短文內容和每小題后的具體要求,在答題卡相應題號后的橫線上寫下相關信息,完成對該問題的回答。答語要意思清楚,結構正確,書寫工整。 Oh, Those Schools Most schools are named after famous people. Other schools are named after the streets on which they are located. Some school names are most unusual. How they were chosen is anyone’s guess. There are schools with names that would make a person think twice before opening the door. The school named Lookout at least warns pupils in advance. You would need the most courage of all to enter the school in Oregon named Tenkiller! Not all unusual school names are strange in a fearful way. Many of the names are pleasant. Who would not feel at home in the school named Welcome? What could go wrong in the school called Allgood? The Bright School, located in Montana, seems to promise that much learning will take place. Other schools have names neither pleasant nor fearful. Their names are simply funny. There are schools with names such as Telephone, and Ducktown. For names to make us smile, what can match Bushyhead in the state of Georgia? Do you think you can find the Nonesuch School? If you look carefully at the word, you will see that its name says there is no such school, but there is. The Nonesuch School is found in Kentucky. 63. Why does a person think twice before opening the doors of some schools? (不多于五個單詞) 64. If you want to visit The Nonesuch School, where will you go? (不多于2個單詞) 65. What does the passage talk about?
