It all started when Graham Broad, a professor at the University of Western Ontario, found McKay’s name in a footnote in a book about university history. McKay was included in a list of university alumni(校友) who had served during the First World War, but his name was unfamiliar to Broad, a specialist in military history. Out of curiosity, Broad spent hours at the local archives(檔案館) in a fruitless search for information on McKay. Tired and discouraged, he finally gave up. On his way out, Broad’s glance happened to fall on an exhibiting case showing some old newspapers. His eye was drawn to an old picture of a young man in a rugby uniform. As he read the words beside the picture ,he experienced a thrilling realization. “After looking for him all day, there he was, staring up at me out of the exhibiting case,” said Broad. Excited by the find, Broad asked his students to continue his search. They bed old newspapers and other materials for clues. Gradually, a picture came into view. Captain Alfred Edwin McKay joined the British Royal Flying Corps in 1916. He downed ten enemy planes, outlived his entire squadron(中隊(duì)) as a WWI flyer, spent some time as a flying instructor in England, then returned to the front, where he was eventually shot down over Belgium and killed in December 1917. But there’s more to his story. “For a brief time in 1916 he was probably the most famous pilot in the world,” says Broad. “He was credited with downing Oswald Boelcke, the most famous German pilot at the time.”Yet, in a letter home, McKay refused to take credit, saying that Boelcke had actually crashed into another German plane. McKay’s war records were destroyed during a World War Ⅱ air bombing on London—an explanation for why he was all but forgotten. But now, thanks to the efforts of Broad and his students, a marker in McKay’s memory was placed on the university grounds in November xx. “I found my eyes filling with tears as I read the word ‘deceased’ (陣亡) next to his name, ”said Corey Everrett,a student who found a picture of Mckay in his uniform. “This was such a simple example of the fact that he had been a student just like us, but instead of finishing his time at Western, he chose to fight and die for his country.” 1.What made Professor Broad continue his search for more information on McKay? There are guided tours every day up this highly active volcano from Antigua, giving travelers a chance to see Mother Nature at her most powerful. Pacaya is an easy drive from Antigua,a beautiful city with many colorful houses along its old streets that are turned into artworks during its Holy Week festival. No matter when you e to Antigua, you won’t miss the Pacayatour panies. But climbing Pacaya is no easy job:it is 2560 metres high, and reaching the summit takes two to three hours of seemingly onestepforward and twostepback movements. As you climb, you hear the dull sounds of eruptions high above. Steaming, hot remains from recent eruptions begin to line the path as you near the active summit:the McKenney Cone (火山錐). Just as though you were going to walk over to the edge of the cone, the road turns to the left and up to the relative safety of the old, inactive summit. Many tours are timed so that you arrive at the cone of the volcano in plenty of time for sunset and the full contrast between the erupting red lava(熔巖) and the darkening sky. On a good day the view from the summit is extremely exciting. The active mouth boils, sending red lava over its sides, and once in a while shoots hot streams up to 100 metres into the air. There is a strong bad smell in the air even if you take care to be upwind of the cone. As evening turns deeper into the night, the burning lava quietly falls down the side of the volcano. For you, too, it is time to get down. 6. What is the main purpose of this passage? A. To attract tourists to Pacaya. B. To describe the beauty of Pacaya. C. To introduce guided tours to Pacaya. D. To explain the power of nature at Pacaya. [答案] A 7. Antigua is a city________. Climbing to the McKenney Cone, people will________. A. walk directly to the active summit B. hear the continuous loud noise from above C. make greater efforts than to other summits D. see a path lined with remains of earlier eruptions [解析] 細(xì)節(jié)理解題。 從“Just as though you were going to walk... inactive summit. ”可以看出A項(xiàng)錯(cuò)誤。從“As you climb, you hear...” 從“and reaching the summit takes... movements.” Many tours are timed for people to________. A. get down the mountain in time when night falls B. avoid the smell from the upwind direction of the cone C. enjoy the fantastic eruption against the darkening sky D. appreciate the scenery of the 2560metrehigh mountain [解析] 細(xì)節(jié)細(xì)解題。從“Many tours are timed so that you arrive at the cone of the volcano in plenty of time for sunset and the full contrast between the erupting red lava and the darkening sky. ”可以看出按時(shí)到達(dá)是為了能欣賞到紅色熔巖和黑色夜色的對(duì)比這一景觀。 [答案] C Ⅴ.話題寫(xiě)作訓(xùn)練 讀寫(xiě)任務(wù) 閱讀下面的短文,然后按照要求寫(xiě)一篇150詞左右的英語(yǔ)短文。 Heath and climate scientists have mapped how climate change affects different parts of the world in different ways. The scientists point out to evidence that changes in the past thirty years may already be affecting human health. Temperature changes may also influence the spread of disease. For example, warmer weather speeds the growth of organisms that cause diseases like malaria(瘧疾) and dengue fever(登革熱). The work by scientists from the University of WisconsinMadison and the World Health Organization appeared in the Journal Nature. Jonathan Patz, professor of the Gaylord Nelson Institute, led the study. He notes that climate scientists linked global warming to the heat that killed thousands of people in Europe in August of xx. He says poor countries are least responsible for the warming yet are most at risk from the health effects of higher temperatures. He says areas at greatest risk include Southern and Eastern Africa and coastlines along the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Also, large cities experience what scientists call a “heat island” effect that can intensify(加強(qiáng)) conditions. Professor Patz says average temperatures worldwide have increased about onethird of a degree Celsius(攝氏的)in the last thirty years. But he tells us even that can make a difference with a disease like malaria. The report says average temperatures could increase by as much as six degrees Celsius by the end of the century. Representatives from about two hundred nations have been meeting in Montreal, Canada to discuss climate change. The tenday conference ends on December 9th. It is the first such United Nations meeting since the Kyoto(京都) Protocol took effect earlier this year. The protocol seeks to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide and other heattrapping gases released as pollution into the air. The problem of the global warming is getting more and more serious. Some evidence shows that disasters in the past thirty years have some relations to the temperature changes.Even some of the diseases such as malaria and dengue fever are due to it. Thousands of people in Europe died from the heat in August of xx, which is another warning to us. In order to keep our earth from getting warmer,we should try to take all possible actions. We must force the factories which send out something to pollute the air to pause their work and improve their facilities. We must try to control the production of cars and encourage people to share the same car when they go to work. At the same time,we must try to produce a vehicle which is powered by solar energy. If we work hard together, we may manage to stop our earth from getting warmer.- 1.
