Reading prehension(43%) Section A Directions: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A, B, C, and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context. It may seem hard to believe that people can actually change the Earth’s climate. But scientists think that the things people do sending greenhouse gases into the air are making our planet 46 . The 47 covers the Earth. It is a thin layer of mixed gases that make up the air we breathe. Weather systems, which develop in the lower atmosphere, are driven by heat 48 the sun and change in the Earth’s surface. Oceans cover about 70 percent of Earth’s surface. Energy 49 or lost by the oceans results in a smaller surface temperature change than would occur over land. The atmosphere and ocean 50 exchange energy and matter. Land covers 27 percent of Earth’s surface, and land topography(地形) influences weather 51 . For example, the weather in areas covered by mountains can be pletely 52 from the weather in areas where the land is mostly flat. Ice is the world’s largest supply of freshwater. It covers the 53 3 percent of Earth’s surface including most of Antarctica and Greenland. Because ice is 54 reflective and because of its insulating (隔離) properties, ice plays an important role in regulating climate. The biosphere(生物圈) is that part of Earth’s atmosphere, land , oceans that 55 any living plant, animal, or organism. It is the place where plants and animals, including humans, live. Choose the best choice to each question or unfinished statement according to what you have just read. (A) What makes one person more intelligent than another? What makes one person a genius, like the brilliant Albert Einstein, and another person a fool? Are people born intelligent or stupid, or is intelligent the result of where and how you live? These are very old questions and the answers to them are still not clear. We know, however, that just being born with a good mind is not enough. In a way the mind is like a leg or an arm muscle. It needs exercise. Mental (done with the mind) exercise is particularly important for young children. Many child psychologists(心理學(xué)家) think that parents should play with their children more and give them problems to think about. The children are then more likely to grow up bright and intelligent. If, on the other hand, children are left alone a great deal with nothing to do, they are more likely to bee dull and unintelligent. Parents should also be careful with what they say to young children. According to some psychologists, if parents are always telling a child that he or she is a fool or an idiot, then the child is more likely to keep doing silly and foolish things. So it is probably better for parents to say very positive (helpful) things to their children, such as “That was a very clever thing you did” or “You are such a smart child”. 56. The words “intelligent” and “brilliant” in the first paragraph probably mean “_____” while “dull” in the second paragraph means “_____”. A. bright and splendid; slow in thinking and understanding B. pretty and handsome; ordinary-looking C. great and important; mon D. hopeful and helpful; careless 57. It is better for parents _____. A. to praise and encourage their children more often B. to be hard on their children C. to leave their children alone with nothing to do D. to give their children as much help as possible 58. Which of the following is NOT true according to the article? A. Parents play an important role in their children’s growth. B. The less you use your mind, the duller you may bee. C. Intelligence is obviously the result of where and how you live. D. What makes a person bright or stupid is still under discussion. (B) America is growing older. Fifty years ago, only 4 out of every 100 people in the United States were 65 or older. Today, 10 out of every 100 Americans are over 65. The aging of the population will affect every aspect of society -–education, medicine, housing, and business. Quietly, the graying of America has made us a very different society -–one in which people have a quite different idea of what kind of behavior is appropriate at various ages. An adult’s age no longer tells you anything about that a person’s economic or marital status, lifestyle, or health. There’s no longer a particular year, or even a particular decade, in which one gets married or goes to work or goes to school or has children. The social clock that kept us on time and told us when to get married, go to school, get a job, or retire isn’t as strong as it used to be. It doesn’t surprise us to hear of a 29-year old university president or a 35-year-old grandmother or a 70-year-old man who has bee a father for the first time. Public attitudes are changing. Many people say, “I am much younger than my mother—or my father was at my age.” No one says, “Act your age,” anymore. We’re stopped looking with disapproval at older people who act in youthful ways. 59. The best explanation of the expression “acting your age” is ______. A. acting a part of a play when you are old enough B. doing the things that people expect you of your age to do C. playing an important role in the society when you are grown up D. working hard and supporting the family when you are an adult 60. The sentence “I am much younger than my mother –or my father was at my age” means that ______. A. I am much younger than my mother or my father when I acted my age B. my mother or my father was older than I am because they are my parents C. I am much younger than my mother or my father when I was at my age D. when my mother or father was at my age, they were older than I am 61. In this article the author mainly tells people that ______. A. the definition of age has changed B. people’s living standard has changed C. people’s attitudes toward other people have changed D. people’s fondness and dislike have changed (C) A very important world problem is the increasing number of people who actually inhabit this planet. The limited amount of land and land resources will soon be unable to support the huge population if it continues to grow at its present rate. So why is this huge increase in population taking place? It is really due to the spread of the knowledge and practice of what is being known as “Death Control”. You have no doubt heard of the term “Birth Control” – “Death Control” is something rather different. It recognizes the work of the doctors and scientists who now keep alive people who, not very long ago, would have died of a variety of then incurable diseases. Through a wide variety of technological innovations that include farming methods and the control of these deadly diseases, we have found ways to reduce the rate at which we die. However, this success is the very cause of the greatest threat to mankind. If we examine the amount of land available for this ever-increasing population, we begin to see the problem. If everyone on the planet had an equal share of land, we would each have about 50000 square metres. This figure seems to be quite encouraging until we examine the type of land we would have. More than three-fifths of the world’s land cannot produce food. Obviously, with so little land to support us, we should be taking great care not to reduce it further. But we are not! Instead, we are consuming its “capital” - its nonrenewable fossil fuels and other mineral deposits that took millions of years to form but which are now being destroyed in decades. We are also doing the same with other vital resources not usually thought of as being nonrenewable such as fertile soils, groundwater and the millions of other species that share earth with us. It is a very mon belief that the problems of the population explosion are caused mainly by poor people living in poor countries who do not know enough to limit their reproduction. This is not true. The actual number of people in an area is not as important as the effect they have on nature. Developing countries do have an effect on their environment, but it is the populations of richer countries that have a far greater impact on the earth as a whole. 62. The word “incurable” in paragraph 2 means _____. A. mon B. widespread C. unknown D. untreatable 63. There isn’t enough land to support human being because _____. A. most of the world’s land is unusable B. there are more seas than land in the world C. the world’s land has already been taken up D. the world’s land is not distributed equally 64. What does “to limit their reproduction” in the last paragraph mean? A. To control death. B. To produce less goods. C. To practice birth control. D. To increase. 65. What do you think the writer is really concerned about? A. Long life spans(跨度). B. Population increase. C. The success of “Death Control”. D. Overuse of resources. Section C Directions: Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from A—AC for each paragraph. There is one extra heading which you do not need. A. Smoking brings many psychological benefits B. Tobacco is an important source of ine to the government C. Smoking is sure to cause diseases D. It’s a short-sighted governmental policy to depend on tobacco for money AB. The advertisement for it is dishonest and harmful AC. The tobacco industry makes high quality advertisement for smoking 66._______________ If you smoke and you still don’t believe that there’s a definite link between smoking and bronchial troubles, the heart disease and the lung cancer, then you are certainly deceiving yourself. Just have a look at those people in hospital with these diseases and count how many of them do not smoke, you may be surprised at the number. Even these few people might be passive smokers without realizing it. 67._______________ Tobacco is a wonderful modity to tax. It’s almost like a tax on our daily bread. In tax revenue alone, the government of Britain collects enough from smokers to pay for its entire educational facilities. So while the authorities point out ever so carefully that smoking may be harmful, it doesn’t do to shout too loudly about it. 68._______________ The advertising of tobacco is one of the problems. We are never shown pictures of real smokers coughing up their lungs early in the morning. That would never do. The advertisements always depict handsome, clean and shaven young men. They suggest it is manly to smoke, even positively healthy! Smoking is associated with the great open-air life, with beautiful girls, true love and togetherness. What utter nonsense! 69.________________ Of course tobacco can help government to raise money. However, while money is eagerly collected in vast sums with one hand, it is paid out in increasingly vaster sums with the other. Enormous amounts are spent on cancer research and on efforts to cure people suffering from the disease. Countless valuable lives are lost. In the long run, there is no doubt that everybody would be much better off if smoking were banned altogether. 70.________________ Smoking can provide constant consolation(慰藉). When I feel worried or nervous, I just get a cigarette and everything seems to get right. After a day’s hard work, the thing I want to do most is smoking. It can be even better with a cup of coffee. It’s so enjoyable and relaxing that it relieves stresses of everyday life. So why bother to ban it and take the pleasure from us? Section D Directions: Read the following passage and answer the questions and plete the sentences in no more than 16 words. The West began to take more notice of the East. The fifth volume of an enormous work re-assessing the Chinese contribution to science and technology is to be published next year.
