I would return from school and spend the expected half hour recording the day’s events, feelings, and impressions in my little blue diary. I did not really need to express my emotions by way of words, but I gained a certain satisfaction from seeing my experiences forever recorded on paper. After all, isn’t accumulating memories a way of preserving the past? When I was thirteen years old, I went on a long journey on foot in a great valley, well-equipped with pens, a diary, and a camera. During the trip, I was busy recording every incident, name and place I came across. I felt proud to be spending my time productively, dutifully preserving for future generations a detailed description of my travels. On my last night there, I wandered out of my tent, diary in hand. The sky was clear and lit by the glare of the moon, and the walls of the valley looked threatening behind their screen of shadows. I automatically took out my pen… At that point, I understood that nothing I wrote could ever match or replace the few seconds I allowed myself to experience the dramatic beauty of the valley. All I remembered of the previous few days were the dull characterizations I had set down in my diary. Now, I only write in my diary when I need to write down a special thought or feeling. I still love to record ideas and quotations that strike me in books, or observations that are particularly meaningful. I take pictures, but not very often—only of objects I find really beautiful. I’m no longer blindly satisfied with having something to remember when I grow old. I realize that life will simply pass me by if I stay behind the camera, busy preserving the present so as to live it in the future. I don’t want to wake up one day and have nothing but a pile of pictures and notes. Maybe I won’t have as many exact representations of people and places; maybe I’ll forget certain facts, but at least the experiences will always remain inside me. I don’t live to make memories—I just live, and the memories form themselves. 21. Before the age of thirteen, the author regarded keeping a diary as a way of ______. A. observing her school routine B. expressing her satisfaction C. impressing her classmates D. preserving her history 22. What caused a change in the author’s understanding of keeping a diary? A. A dull night on the journey. B. The beauty of the great valley. C. A striking quotation from a book. D. Her concerns for future generations. 23. What does the author put in her diary now? A. Notes and beautiful pictures. B. Special thoughts and feelings. C. Detailed accounts of daily activities. D. Descriptions of unforgettable events. 24. The author es to realize that to live a meaningful life is ______. A. to experience it B. to live the present in the future C. to make memories D. to give accurate representations of it B While Simon Brooks’ new storytelling CD may be titled A Tangle of Tales, there is nothing at all confusing to keep them tied up and away from your enjoyment. With stories from Celtic lands, Vietnam and India, Simon creates a smooth and enjoyable set of stories that never make your mind in a mess. Told with his authentic (純正的) United Kingdom accent and along with custom music by the storyteller and friends, the story collection is overall rather calming yet might surprise you in how quickly the layers of the tales take you into their weling. If we have any ment, it is that the track listings do not line up with what is listed on the packaging. It seems that the music between tracks has not been taken into account. While the music is very nice, it makes the story you want (at least the first time) a bit of an adventure. This is a minor point in an excellent CD. These days, people buy CDs and tracks of music and stories with the new electronic ways, but not everyone gives as much thought to the CD case as Simon has. Frankly, like all of his CD collections, the artwork is excellent. The teller and the artist (Rob Brookes) have joined forces to create both a visual and auditory (聽(tīng)覺(jué)的) adventure. Nicely done. Although age 8 and up is listed on the cover of the CD, in our opinion, it would most likely be best for listeners from the age of 10 and up — simply for the plexity(復(fù)雜) of the stories told. If you’d like to order a copy, take a look at CD baby. or on Amazon.. 25. This text is mainly about ____________ Simon’s new storytelling CD. A. the summary of B. the ments on C. the quotations from D. the details of 26. According to the text, which of the following is TRUE? A. The author feels a little confused about Simon’s stories. B. There’s something wrong with the CD’s track listings. C. Most stories in the CD are about adventures. D. Simon’s stories are too difficult for a 10- year-old child. 27. From the text, we can know that ______. A. many people like collecting Simon’s storytelling CDs B. you may feel fortable listening to the creative CD made by Simon himself C. the stories in Simon’s CD are set in Britain D. you will not feel bored when listening to Simon’s stories 28. What’s the author’s attitude towards this CD? A. Uninterested. B. Approving. C. Disappointed. D. Doubtful. C Thomas Edison was one of ten said to be the greatest genius of his age. There are only a few men in all of the history, who have changed the lives of other men as much as the inventor of the first useful electric light. But Edison could never be happy only because someone said he was a genius.“ There is no such thing as genius,” Edison said. He said that what people called genius was mostly hard work. But Edison was a dreamer as well as a worker. From his earliest days as a child he wondered about the secrets of nature. Nature, he often said, is full of secrets. He tried to understand them; then, he tried to learn what could usefully be done with them. Edison enjoyed thinking. He knew that most people will do almost anything instead of the difficult work of thinking, especially if they do not think very often. But he knew, too, that thinking can give men enjoyment and pleasure. Edison could not understand how anyone could be uninterested in life. As he loved to think, he also loved to work. On the day he became 75 years old, someone asked him what ideas he had about life. “Work,” he answered. “Discovering the secrets of nature and using them to make men happier.” He said he had enough inventions in his mind to give him another 100 years of work. 29. He was hungry so he decided to beg for a meal at the next house. However, he became nervous when a lovely young woman opened the door. Instead of a meal, he asked for a drink of water. She thought he looked hungry so she brought him a large glass of milk. He drank it slowly, and then asked, “How much do I owe you?” “You don’t owe me anything,” she replied, “Mother has taught me never to accept any pay for a kindness.” He said, “Then I thank you from the bottom of my heart.” As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but it also increased his faith in God and the human race. He was about to give up and quit before this point. Years later, the young woman became seriously ill. The local doctors were baffled. They finally sent her to the big city, where specialists could be called in to study her rare disease. Dr. Howard Kelly, now famous, was called in for the consultation. When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes. Immediately, he rose and went down through the hospital hall into her room. Dressed in his doctor’s gown he went in to see her. He recognized her at once. He went back to the consultation room and determined to do his best to save her life. From that day, he gave special attention to her case. After a long struggle, the battle was won. Dr. Kelly requested the business office to pass the bill to him for approval. He looked at it and then wrote something on the side. The bill was sent to her room. She was afraid to open it because she was positive that it would take the rest of her life to pay it off. Finally she looked, and the note on the side of the bill caught her attention. She read these words, “Paid in full with one glass of milk.” (Signed) Dr. Howard Kelly Tears of joy flooded her eyes as she prayed silently, “Thank You, God.
