Can you see the four students in front of the class? They are giving a new lesson to the others. They are really hardworking, aren’t they? And I think it’s very brave of them to stand in front of the others and give a new lesson. Can you see the tallest girl? Her name is Liu Hanya. She used to be the monitor in my class. Let’s listen to the tape and answer the following questions: Who does Millie think would be a good chairperson? Why does she think so? 2. Please read after the tape and try to remember the dialogue. Later I’ll ask you to make up your own dialogues, using Millie and Kitty’s as a model. 3. However, other students don’t agree with her. You are one of them. You need to express your own ideas. Please make up your own dialogues in pairs. You can remend Suzy or David. Remember: give your reasons. 4. Maybe you don’t think anyone of them is suitable for this position. Who else would be more suitable? This time, you can remend anybody you know. Maybe he or she is one of your classmates. Just remember: give us enough reasons. III. Formal and informal language: 1. T: Great. You have chosen the most suitable person. In this unit, you need to write a formal letter to remend him. Do you know the differences between formal and informal language? Please look at me: Hi, guys! Hello, ladies and gentlemen! Which one is formal and which one is informal? Ss: The first one is informal; the second one is formal. T: Now I will give you another two sentences: Excuse me, could I borrow your eraser please? Eraser, please! This time, which one is formal? Which is informal? Ss: The first one is formal, and the second one is informal. 2. Give them more expressions to decide if they are formal or informal. 3. If they can’t, teacher can do it.) In formal written language, we can’t use informal greetings (hi Jim), informal endings (yours, Millie), slang words (it looks cool), informal words (Hope to see you soon), jokes (David has much more hair than my uncle). Abbreviations(No. 1) and contractions(He’s) can be used in formal oral English, but they can’t be used in formal written English. 4. Correct the mistakes in a letter: (Correct the mistakes in the letter on P16 in Students’ books) (explain to the students that we should give our full names at the end of such a formal letter) IV.
