English began to grow more quickly when William Caxton returned to Britain in the year 1476. He had been in Holland and other areas of Europe where he had learned printing. He returned to Britain with the first printing press. The printing press made it possible for almost anyone to buy a book. It helped spread education and the English language. Slowly, during the 1500s, English became the modern language we would recognize. English speakers today would be able to municate with English speakers in the last part of the 16th Century. It was during this time period that the greatest writer in English produced his work. His name was William Shakespeare (1564—1616). His plays continue to be printed, acted in theaters, and seen in motion pictures almost four hundred years after his death. Experts say that Shakespeare’s work was written to be performed on the stage, not to be read. Yet every sound of his words can produce word pictures, and provide feelings of anger, fear, and laughter. Shakespeare’s famous playRomeoandJulietis so sad that people cry when they see this famous story. The development of the English language took a giant step just nine years before the death of William Shakespeare, and Britain started to have colonies in North America, Africa and Asia. The English language also became part of these colonies. And the English language grew as words from the native languages were added. English speakers also continue to invent new words by linking old words together. A good example is the words "motor" and "hotel". Many years ago someone linked them together into the word "motel". A motel is a small hotel near a road where people travelling in cars can stay for the night. Other words may e from the first letters of names of groups or devices. A device to find objects that cannot be seen called Radio Detecting and Ranging became "Radar"; the North Atlantic Treaty Organization is usually called NATO. 9. When did English bee the modern language we would recognize? A. In 1476. B. In the 1500s. C. In the 15th Century. D. In the 1900s 10. What role did William Caxton play in the English language? A. He invented the first printing press. B. He introduced English into Holland and other areas of Europe. C. He introduced printing to England. D. He printed many books about William Shakespeare. 11. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 4? A. The influence of the death of William Shakespeare. B. Britain started to have colonies in other continents. C. English was popular in British colonies. D. The English language spread and grew. D In this day and age when we tend to throw away toys that are even slightly worn, it is tough to believe that there is a "hospital" where dolls as well as all kinds of beloved stuffed animals can be repaired and brought back to their original glory. What is even more amazing is that such a place has existed for a century and is still going strong. Wele to Sydney’s "Original Doll Hospital" that celebrated its 100th birthday, on February 22nd, 2013. The unique business came into being rather accidentally. In 1913, a general store owner in Sydney began importing Japanese dolls. However, the rubber bands that held them together would often break on the boat journey. Luckily for him, his brother Harold Chapman Sr., was a good handyman and set aside a little "hospital" area in the store, to repair the delicate toys. In 1930, Chapman’s son also named Harold, relocated the doll hospital and expanded the business even further, by agreeing to repair anything that could be fixed—no matter how big or small. While business was robust (穩(wěn)固的), the real boom came in 1938 during World War Ⅱ. Faced with extreme restrictions, new dolls and toys became rare, and young girls and boys had no choice but to get their existing ones, lovingly repaired—by one of the 70 "doctors" on the staff. While it does not have as many employees today, the hospital that is run by his son Geoff Chapman now sits in a good location with a beautiful store—one that features everything a little girl could possibly wish for—from new to used, to even extremely rare and valuable dolls. Though it may not appear to be, the doctors say their jobs are very interesting, given that no two dolls are the same or need the same repairs and that just like medical doctors, they have no idea what challenge they will have to face, when they e to work each day. The one advantage is that there are no emergency night calls to worry about! 12. What do we know about the doll hospital now? A. It is not as good as it used to be. B. It is still developing quickly.
